Written by Mary Salatino

New York's 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course is a mandatory first step toward securing your license. A pre-licensing course provides you with foundational training before you hit the road. You must finish the course before your road test appointment is scheduled.

This article explores NY pre-license driving classes, their importance and the benefits they offer. Read on to learn what New York motorists can expect from these essential programs.

Who Needs Pre-License Training in New York?

New York 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Training is required for new drivers in the Empire State, regardless of age, and teaches safe and responsible driving. Students gain the knowledge, skills and confidence required to navigate the road by completing five hours of training approved by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYS DMV).

If you have never held a driver license before, you must complete an approved classroom or online 5-hour Pre-Licensing Course before you take your road test. We report your completion to the state of New York, so you won't need a course certificate.

You must be at least 18 at the time of purchase to take the course online. If you are younger than 18 or wish to apply for your junior driver license (Class DJ) or junior motorcycle license (Class MJ), you must complete the program in person. Online classes are not yet available for Class DJ or MJ.
