Frequently Asked Questions
Who should take the Defensive Driving Course?
Drivers looking to dismiss an eligible traffic ticket or save up to 10% on their insurance should take the online Texas Defensive Driving course. Students will learn about traffic safety problems and crash prevention strategies, making them safer and more effective drivers.
Does the Defensive Driving course meet Texas state requirements?
Yes. Our online defensive driving course is accepted by all Texas county courts and approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Our approval is listed as American Safety Council, which owns and operates SafeMotorist.
Who qualifies for Texas ticket dismissal?
To dismiss a traffic ticket in Texas, you must:
- Possess a valid, non-commercial Texas driver license or permit
- Admit guilt or sign a statement that you do not contest the citation
- Not have dismissed a traffic ticket within the past 12 months
- Not have received a speeding citation for a speed 25 mph or more above the posted limit
Check with the county where you received your ticket to confirm that you are eligible to dismiss your ticket by completing a defensive driving course.
Who needs to take a Texas drivers education course?
We offer Texas drivers ed training to new drivers of all ages. Teens ages 14 to 17 can meet the drivers ed requirement for their Texas learner's permit online with our parent-taught or self-taught drivers ed courses.
Adults ages 18 to 24 are required to complete an adult drivers education course before taking the road test for their Texas driver's license. Texas state law does not require those 25 and older to take a drivers ed course for their license, but it is still highly recommended for all new drivers.
How do I get my Texas driving record?
You can order your Texas driving record from the DPS website. To dismiss a traffic ticket in Texas, you must provide your driving record and a defensive driving course certificate to the court.
Type 3A driving records contain your driving history, including accidents, infractions that have been settled by the court during the past three years, driving restrictions and any other driving-related information. Points dismissed by traffic school will not be visible.
