The Alaska Point System
The Alaska Point System assigns point values for traffic violations, ranging from two to ten, depending on the severity of the offense. Points are added to your driving record for each offense. Accumulating points can negatively impact your driving record, leading to higher insurance rates, potential license suspension and difficulty securing coverage in the future.
Taking an Alaska defensive driving course can reduce or remove points. You may also be able to dismiss a traffic citation with court permission.
You must meet the following conditions to remove two points from your driving record with this course: You have not completed a driver improvement program in the past 12 months and you have a valid Alaska driver's license. If you're unsure about your eligibility, contact your local Alaska DMV for more information.
Defensive Driving Course Insurance Discount
Many auto insurance companies in Alaska offer up to a 10% discount on the liability portion of your policy when you complete a state-approved defensive driving course. The exact discount amount depends on your insurer.
To claim your discount, simply send a copy of your defensive driving course completion certificate to your insurance provider. This discount is valid for three years — you can renew it by retaking the course every three years.
Contact your insurance company for specific details on your potential savings and the submission process.
