Step 3: Take the Practice Exam (Optional)
A practice exam can help you gauge your preparedness. Although it's optional, getting some Ohio permit test practice online can boost your confidence and familiarize you with the assessment format. An official practice test for the Ohio BMV permit test is available on the web.
Step 4: Create an Account
Once you're ready, you can start the examination process. To get started, visit the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) website. Create a user account by providing the necessary personal information. We discuss identity documents in detail below.
This account will be your portal for various BMV services, including the knowledge exam. You're also required to pass Social Security and OHBMV verification checks before you can take the learner's examination.
Step 5: Schedule the Exam
Navigate to the BMV's online services section. Click the "More Services" button and select "Online Knowledge Test."
Be sure to have a secure internet connection and webcam. Schedule plenty of time in a quiet area to avoid interruptions during the assessment process. Follow all the rules or you may fail the exam.
Step 6: Take the Online Permit Test
When you feel ready, access the assessment through your BMV account. The exam is multiple-choice. You will answer 40 questions. Topics include traffic laws, safe driving practices and more.
Read each question carefully and select the best answer. You have 60 minutes to complete the assessment.
Step 7: Receive Your Results
You will receive your results immediately after completing the learner's exam. A result of 75% or better is a passing score. If you pass, you will receive instructions on the next steps, including how to obtain the physical copy of your driver's authorization.
If you fail, you're required to wait at least 24 hours before your second attempt. You have unlimited attempts to take the knowledge exam.
Obtaining Your Learner's Permit
To get your temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC), visit your local deputy registrar license agency with the necessary documentation and payment, detailed below. You must also pass a vision screening. Purchase your TIPIC within 60 days of passing the knowledge assessment.
Proof of identity:
You will need to prove your identity. Here are the facts you must establish:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Legal presence in the United States
- Social Security number
- OH residency (street address)
The BMV offers a list of acceptable documents. To make it easier to sort out all the compliant paperwork, use this handy tool. Make sure to bring everything the first time to save yourself the headache of repeated appointments.
Parental consent (if under 18)
If you're under 18, your parent or legal guardian must accompany you to the BMV and sign the parental consent form.
Payment for fees
Be prepared to pay the required fees for acquiring your driver's authorization. Accepted forms of payment include cash, check, money order or credit/debit card.
Remember to check with your local BMV office for the most up-to-date and specific information on program requirements, documents, fees, scheduling and other concerns.
