Two critical concepts you must understand related to pavement markings are the meaning of line colors and if they are solid or broken.

Double Solid Yellow Lines in the middle of the Road alert you that passing is not permitted. A Broken Single Yellow Line means you may temporarily cross the line to pass if it is safe.

Solid Double White Lines in the middle of the Road alert you that you may not cross these lines. A Single Broken White Line indicates you can change lanes when it is safe.

Single Solid White Line

You may travel in the same direction on both sides of this line, but do not cross the line unless you must do so to avoid a hazard. Also used to discourage lane changes near intersections.

Drivers from either direction may use the center lane for left turns. You may not use the center turn lane for passing.

Stop Line and Crosswalk

Stop lines show you where you must stop for a stop sign or red light. You should stop your vehicle before any part of it crosses the stop line. Not part of your vehicle should be in the crosswalk when you stop and you must always yield the right of way to pedestrians.
